Everything you can do with a digital art file (more than you might think)
When people first encounter digital art downloads, the reaction is sometimes a little uncertain. You're buying a file. There's nothing to unwrap. Nothing arrives in the post. It can feel like a strange kind of purchase — until you realise what that file actually gives you, and then it starts to feel like the most sensible way to buy art you've ever come across.
I've put together this guide because I want anyone buying a print from my collection to get the absolute most from it. And the honest answer is — you can do quite a lot.
You choose the size
Every digital file I offer comes in multiple aspect ratios at 300dpi and 64 megapixel for maximum flexibility. In plain terms, that means you can print anything from a small 5x7 inch print for a bedside table to a genuinely large statement piece for a feature wall — all from the same file, all at full professional quality.
Most people don't realise that 64MP is an extraordinary resolution. To give you a sense of scale, that's more than enough to fill an A1 poster with sharp, rich detail. If you've ever bought a large print and been disappointed by how soft or pixelated it looked up close — that won't happen here.
You choose the finish
When you take a file to a print shop — or upload it to an online printing service — you get to choose your paper (or canvas). And that choice changes the feel of a piece completely. A matte fine art paper gives a soft, almost painterly quality that suits the coastal light in my images beautifully. A lustre or satin finish brings out the colours more vividly. Glossy is striking and bold. None of these options cost significantly more than another — but each one creates a genuinely different object on your wall.
You choose the frame
Because nothing arrives pre-framed, you get to choose exactly what the finished piece looks like in your space. A simple white frame keeps things fresh and contemporary. Natural wood is warm and organic — it works particularly well with coastal and nature-inspired art. A dark or black frame makes colour pop and adds drama. You can find inexpensive ready-made frames in places such as IKEA, The Range and Dunelm which come in a range of sizes that work perfectly with standard print dimensions. Or have something bespoke made at a local framing shop that will suit your space perfectly.
You can print it more than once
This is the one people are sometimes surprised by. Once you've purchased a digital file, you have it. Which means if you move house, or you want the same image in a different room, or your print gets damaged — you can simply print it again. No reordering, no waiting, no additional cost.
You can create a truly personal gift
This is where digital files become something really special. Once you have the file, you can upload it to any print-on-demand service and create far more than just a framed print. Imagine a jigsaw of a favourite stretch of coastline for someone who loves the sea. A cushion carrying the colours of a particular sunset. A tote bag, a mug, a greetings card, a notebook, a phone case — all featuring a moment of coastal magic that means something to the person you're giving it to.
Services like Printed.com, Snapfish, Photobox and Boots Photo all offer personalised product printing at very reasonable prices, and the high resolution of these files means everything comes out beautifully.
The one thing to note is that these files are licensed for personal use only — so printing for yourself, your home and personal gifts is absolutely fine, but the files themselves can't be shared or passed on, and commercial use isn't permitted. If you're ever unsure about what's covered, just drop me a message and I'll happily clarify.
A word on printing at home
A decent home printer on good quality paper can produce beautiful results — particularly for smaller sizes up to A4. The main thing to be aware of is colour calibration — screens display colours differently to how printers reproduce them, so your print may look slightly different to the image on screen. This is completely normal. If colour accuracy matters to you, a professional print shop will give you the most consistent results.
If you have a particular wall in mind and you're not sure which size or aspect ratio would work best, feel free to drop me a message — I'm always happy to help you figure it out.
